Frequently Asked Questions
Why must I be a United States citizen to attend?
Our studies use mock juries for real, active court cases, so participants must meet the same legal eligibility requirements as an actual juror — including U.S. citizenship. You'll also need to bring a valid state ID or driver's license showing the ZIP code on file in your Truscott Database profile; this is how we confirm your eligibility before the event.
Will I receive meals?
Yes. A full breakfast and coffee are provided every event day, along with a lunch with a break, snacks, and drinks. If a specific event's meal schedule differs, you'll be notified in advance.
How much will I be compensated?
Compensation is $400 for a full-day event and $200 for a half-day event. Our team calls you directly with the specific details of your event, including the exact pay, and then follows up with a confirmation email. If a particular event's rate differs from the standard, we'll let you know before you commit to attending.
How and when will I be paid?
We use Tremendous, an outside payment vendor. Compensation is paid digitally, and you'll choose how to receive it: instant debit card transfer, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or bank transfer. Please allow two to four business days for a bank transfer. Before you leave the event, you'll receive an email that walks you through payment with Tremendous.
Depending on the method you choose, you'll need:
- Instant Debit Transfer (IDT): Most participants choose this option. It deposits directly to your bank account using your debit card. You'll need your phone number, email address, name as shown on your card, debit card number, expiration date, CVV, billing address, and ZIP code.
- PayPal: The name and email on your PayPal account.
- Venmo: The email and phone number on your Venmo account.
- Bank Transfer: Your email address, account-holder name, routing number, account number, and checking or savings selection. Please allow two to four business days.
Can others I know attend?
Yes — friends and other people you know are welcome, as long as they're not immediate family and don't live at your address. We ask this because people from the same household often discuss cases together beforehand, which can affect the independence of opinions during deliberation. Anyone you invite must register separately, using their own information.
How do I share joining the database with someone I know?
Share our Participate page with them so they can learn more and join the database using their own information.
What happens after joining the database?
Once you join, our team reaches out whenever an event comes up in your area — usually by phone, with a follow-up email if we can't reach you. We'll share the event details so you can decide if it's a good fit before committing. How soon you hear from us depends on how often events run near you.
When will Truscott have an event in my city?
Event timing and locations depend on where active research is happening, so we can't promise a date for your specific city. You are welcome to email us or wait for our team to reach out once something opens up near you.
Do I need to sign anything, like a confidentiality agreement?
Yes. Because these are real, active court cases, you'll sign a confidentiality agreement before the event begins, covering case details, the parties involved, and anything discussed during deliberation.
How long does the event last, and do I need to be available the whole time?
Most events run a full day, typically 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM, though some are scheduled as half-day sessions. Your confirmation call and email will spell out the exact hours. Full attendance is expected, since deliberation and group discussion happen throughout the day.
Are there any professions or backgrounds that disqualify me?
People who work in law enforcement, as attorneys or paralegals, in insurance claims, or who have a personal connection to a similar type of case, are often excluded. The actual list may vary on a case-by-case basis.
What's the minimum age to participate?
You must be at least 18, in line with the general legal requirement for jury service.
What if I need to cancel or leave early after confirming?
We understand plans change. If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your spot to someone else.
Is my personal and financial information kept secure?
Yes. Payment details are submitted directly through Tremendous, our secure third-party payment vendor, rather than being stored by Truscott Research. Truscott Research takes your personal information security very seriously. Please review our Privacy Policy for more information.
Can I participate more than once, or is there a limit?
Yes, you're welcome to participate in more than one study. Because our events are tied to real, active court cases, we typically wait until a case concludes before reaching out to you about a new one, which can take up to three years, depending on the case. Once that case is resolved, you're eligible to be considered for other events.
